Android 2.3 Gingerbread Unofficially Comes Available For The 5" Dell Streak

Say what you want about the Dell Streak, and to be honest, I have received more than my fair share of comments from Streak users after I have sold it short in the past. Bottom line, I am not all that convinced that the Streak 5 has a big user base, however one thing is certain — they are devoted.

And with that, we have some good news for those sporting a Streak 5 this morning. Well, good news assuming you are looking to run Android 2.3 and willing to load a custom ROM. Coming way by of the MoDaCo user forums, StreakDroid 2.0.0 is now available for download and installation. And just to offer a nice play based on Gingerbread, version 2 of StreakDroid has been dubbed GingerStreak.

The GingerStreak ROM is based on Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and includes the latest 2.3 Google Apps (from 7/03/2011) as well as the basic StreakDroid apps and Swype. In addition there is video chat support using Google Talk, which is noted as working “fairly well.”

Otherwise, some of the known issues deal with the superuser as well as graphics performance.

• Superuser seems to possibly have issues, cant seem to pin it down yet but seems that updating superuser from market helps for some.
• GPS and 720p video REQUIRE the engineering baseband and dsp below to be flashed in fastboot.
• Graphics performance is not as great as id like, still working on that though

With that, those looking to install and run StreakDroid 2.0.0 will need to head on over to the MoDaCo forums (use the link below) and follow the following directions.

• Download Streakdroid5-2.0.zip
• Boot into StreakMod or Clockwork Recovery
• Select Update from Zip File > Select Zip File From SD Card > StreakDroid5-2.0.zip
• Wait for installation.
• First Boot may take longer than a normal boot. Things are being installed, stuff is being generated. Patience.
