SYMBEOSE Project Cancelled By European Commission

With Nokia No Longer Focusing On Symbian, EC Decides To Pull Out of 22 Million Euro SYMBEOSE Project

Drastic things happen when a big tech firm decides to ditch one technology for another. With Nokia getting into bed with Microsoft, projects banking on its Symbian platform are beginning to fall apart.

Recall that we reported on a joint venture project called SYMBEOSE late last year. It was supposed to be Symbian – the Embedded Operating System for Europe, but with major partner Nokia focusing its energies on other windows of opportunity, the European Commission has decided to pull the plug on its 22 million euro funding for the project.

SYMBEOSE was seen as a last-ditch effort to resurrect the ailing Symbian platform, with a consortium consisting of the EU and various private sector partners. But alas, with a lack of clear direction, the EU has decided that the embedded-OS project was no longer viable.  Sources from the EC have confirmed that the EU has not paid anything toward the project at this point, which is probably best, as we don’t see Symbian rising back to its former glory anytime soon.
