Qualcomm Will Power Windows Phone 7.1 Devices With 2nd Generation Snapdragon Processors [Qualcomm Makes It Official, They Will Be The Exclusive Chip Provider For WP 7.1 Mango Devices]

Coming as a bit of follow up to the earlier Windows Phone news, it looks like Qualcomm had a bit of WP7 related news of their own. According to statements, they will be the exclusive chip provider for Windows Phone 7.1 devices.

Of course, we cannot help but think that this puts a damper on the recent rumors that we were going to be seeing Nokia branded Windows Phone devices running dual-core processors from ST-Ericsson. That being said, according to the statement from Qualcomm, they will be the exclusive partner for Windows Phone 7.1 Mango devices.

“In close coordination with Microsoft, Qualcomm are excited to bring a new generation of Windows Phone handsets exclusively featuring Qualcomm’s second generation Snapdragon mobile processors to market.”

Then again, that does not mean that we will not see an introduction of ST-Ericsson powered Windows Phone devices come along with version 8. Furthermore, given Nokia has already confirmed today that they will be shipping a device with Mango we have to believe that the first Windows Phone running devices from Nokia will have Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

Nonetheless, Nokia did state they they plan to “develop and release a portfolio of products that address as many of our audiences and markets as possible.”

With that, other Qualcomm related Mango news includes this statement from Steve Mollenkopf who is the executive vice president and group president of Qualcomm.

“Qualcomm has a long history of working closely with Microsoft and we continue to support the launches of new Windows Phones based on our Snapdragon processors.  We are excited about this next Windows Phone Mango release that will leverage the synergy of our highly integrated second generation Snapdragon solution and Microsoft’s Windows Phone software,”

Speaking personally, regardless of whether we only see Windows Phone devices with Qualcomm chips or with both Qualcomm and St-Ericsson chips I think it is safe to say this — new WP7 hardware will be nice to see.
