Playstation Network Down Update: Sony Takes PSN Offline Again

Sony Takes Playstation Network Down Again For Maintenance, Says Earlier Reports Of A Revived Playstation Store Won't Fly Today

If you’ve noticed that the Playstation Network is, once again, down, you may take some comfort in knowing that, this time at least, it was completely planned. And at last report, it has nothing to do with Anonymous or hackers or anything else, but rather, some basic housekeeping. They’re calling it “system maintenance”, and it’s actually the most mundane thing they’ve done yet. But there’s further bad news in the form of another update from Sony too.

Sony was planning to take the Playstation Network down from eight AM until five PM Pacific time, which means you’ve still got at least four hours to go. They further said that it’s not a security-related issue, and while you won’t be able to sign in on your PS3 or your PSP, your Sony websites like Playstation.com will be unaffected. However, your ability to register or change your password will be down for absolutely everybody.

And in worse news, the earlier reports featuring internal memos that said the Playstation Store would be back online today are also apparently shot, as Sony’s now projecting that the Playstation Store will be back up and operational by the end of the month. However, if you bought stuff there already, be it movies or games, you’ll be able to get access to them. New content is right out for the time being, a move that’s doubtless costing Sony a ton of cash.

It’s another in a long, long string of disappointments for Sony gamers, and hopefully Sony can get its house back in order before too many folks end up giving up and going to Xbox for their gaming needs. Though based on the responses we’ve had here of late, it looks like a lot of you guys are some real Sony diehards. But is this the last straw for you? I am about ready to save myself somebody else the headaches of all this and throw my ps3 in the trash instead of selling it… what is the point if they are going to make us pay for internet play anyways… may as well buy an xbox!

    2. InSaNe_xASYLUM says:

pretty lame that its down, but if its only going to be a few more hours not a big deal

    3. Anonymous says:

      I hate sony now

    4. 2Noob4U says:

I would imagine Sony is losing a ton of money, but switching systems is not something I am going to be doing anytime soon.

I hated Windows Vista, but it wasn’t like I was going to throw out my PC for a Mac. I’m sure Sony will put it’s big boy pants on and get with the program by the end of the month.

As for PAYING for Xbox Live… Or FREE PSN…. I’ll be waiting patiently for free swag compliments of their screw up. (Wipeout HD + Fury anyone?)

    5. Actually we had a bit on that yesterday, how Sony was projecting some pretty substantial losses. And they’ll really only get worse if this kind of thing keeps up.

    6. Speaking here as an Xbox player myself, it’s not like they don’t have their own troubles. Red ring a bell, if I can be pardoned a pun?

    7. Assuming something else doesn’t go wrong.

    8. i hate this says:

      im going to xbox

    9. this is not for a few hours says:

its going to take like 10 days b4 it goes bac on

I’m not a gigantic online gamer but the inability to access the store for downloads is really starting to piss me off.

I bought MK when it was released and still haven’t been able to redeem the codes I got with it. Aside the fact that a new Fallout expansion was just released.

Do your research next time you piss someone off and they tell you they’re going to eff with your network, Sony.

    11. long long time says:

how long till register back up i really wanna get it

    12. Darkwolfen_1971 says:

People shouldn’t be mad at Sony. They should be pissed at the idiots who hacked into Sony and caused all the problems. Give Sony a break…they’re trying to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

    13. unss says:

It is really sux to wait all this time and take it down again . Its still down.
Im a huge online gamer and addicted to pes 2011 , its been a month since i didnt play.
I dont want anything just put it back online and piss off.

    14. LIBK82 says:

I’m getting tired of this bullshit.

    15. PS3'er says:

Well yes people shouldnt be mad at sony and sony should have been more careful beforehand. I mean cmon….when you’re dealing with thousands of clients who are paying you and trusting you with their private information…YOU GOT TO FKING MAKE SURE NO SHIT HAPPENDS. So Sony…just do your best, but IF U SAY UR GOING TO HAVE SOMETHING DONE BY A CERTAIN DATE ….DONT BE ANNOYING AND DISAPPOINT US EVERYTIME.

Better to just say u can’t do it by that date rather than making promises you can’t keep.

    16. flea84 says:

whether the psn comes back up or not i’m going to be sticking with sony for the simple fact that just because of online issues, i DON’T need to lower my expectations for a good video game by going to 360. there are alot of really good offline games in the sony library (which is more than i can say for 360) and i dont NEED online play as long as the story line in a single player game is good

    17. flea84 says:

your talking about disapointment with sony telling us when they had hoped to have things back up and running, yet you probably still have faith in games that have been saying that there “on the way” or “out soon” like duke nukem (i’m waiting for it too btw) but looking at the software side would you rather them release it unfinished like some companies do with their games or would you rather wait until it is actually done? i’m all for waiting for it to be done rather than have an “incomplete system” to run on and have these issues again in the future. besides like i posted below sony has a great selection of offline games available

    18. Nagyfoo says:

I’m sure whoever did this to Sony could’ve done it too Xbox. It sucks that this happened but Sony is working hard for us. I don’t think everyone should bail on them just because of some hacker douche bag.
      I still like Sony.

    19. Flea84 raises a good point. We’ve all been burned like that one way or another, with games especially–KOTOR 2′s Choose Your Own Adventure ending comes to mind–but PS3′er makes a good point in his own right. It’s a terrible idea to set dates and then not stick to them. It’s better to just stick to the general–we’re working on the problem and expect solutions soon–and then keep people regularly updated even if the updates start looking similar after a while.

    20. There are also plenty of good games on Xbox 360 you won’t be getting on PS3. Strange how that works, isn’t it?

    21. To be fair, it’s not just because of “some hacker douche bag” that a lot of people are having problems with Sony. “Some hacker douche bag” shouldn’t be able to access personal data in the first place. That stuff should be much more heavily protected than it apparently was. And one thing I’ve found writing about this is that a lot of people were getting more information from blogs like us than from Sony proper, and that’s just a disservice to their customers. Sony’s hands aren’t clean on this one, though I do give them some credit for effort.

How about everyone stops complaining and gets a job instead (or a girlfriend or a life in general.)

    24. Andy says:

    25. boz says:

This is ridiculous. The playstation network is down AGAIN!!! I guess you do get what you pay for when it comes to online gaming. Pay for nothing… you get nothing. Thanks Sony!

    26. Mad Dog says:

every1 shld quitcher bitchin… like the_situation760 said.. lets all live our lives… go outside n smell da flowers… clean ur houses… play w/ ur kids (not vidgames, lulz) take a walk… but QUITCHER BITCHIN!
