Barnes & Noble Announces New Nook Reader, Comes With E-Ink Touchscreen Display & $139 Price Tag

Barnes Noble Officially Announces The Touch Enabled Nook With Pearl E-Ink Display & Two Month Battery Life

Coming more as an expected occurrence than a surprise, Barnes & Noble took to the stage this morning and unveiled a new Nook reader. And nicely done as we failed to see any leaked images of the new reader. But more important is that Barnes & Noble seems to have stepped just ahead of the Amazon Kindle in terms of the display and battery life.

And no, Barnes & Noble has not gone entirely color. Yes, they still have the Nook Color, however this new Nook reader is sporting a touch-enabled 6 inch Pearl E-Ink display. In addition, the display is using a new technology called eFlash that is said to have up to “80 percent less flashing.” In other words, page turning should be much improved. Speaking of page turning, that can be done by using the touchscreen display or the “well-placed” side buttons which sit to the left and right of the display.

Otherwise, the new Nook measures in at 5 x 6.5 x 0.47 inches and weighs in at just 7.48 ounces. And part of that small size and light weight comes in with the lack of buttons, the new Nook does not have a keyboard and has also lost the color display found on the previous generation Nook.

Another perk comes in the form of the battery life, which is said to be able to last up to two months (with the Wi-Fi turned off). In other words, Barnes & Noble has just upped the game, and just for reference the Kindle currently has a battery life of one month. That being said, in reality, I would not think it much of an issue to have to charge once a month.

For those wondering, the new Nook comes with Wi-Fi in terms of connectivity and is priced at $139. The Nook will be available for pre-order beginning today and is expected to start shipping on June 10th.
