Nissho Brings Out Dimenco's 52 Inch Glasses-Free 3D Television

Japanese Shelves Now Stock The Dimenco Television, A Model That Impresses With Its Specs

Chances are pretty good you’ve never actually heard of Dimenco before. Dimenco is reportedly part of a splinter group that broke off from Philips, and we actually covered part of the fruits of that labor way back in September of last year. But the wait is finally over for those wanting to get their hands on one of these, at least if you’re over in Japan, or know someone who will ship you one of these.

The “these” in question is a substantial 52 inch 1080p LCD television that boasts a lenticular display, meaning that you’ll be able to see a full-on 3D image and all without the need for cumbersome 3D glasses. The 3D effect is actually described as “2D + depth”, which actually converts 2D to 3D in real time. Sounds pretty good, of course, but the rest of the features aren’t near so rosy, including a lackluster 2000 : 1 contrast ratio, 700 nits of brightness, a 60 Hz refresh rate and eight ms response time.

And things only get worse when you consider the price tag. The folks out at Nissho Electronics in Japan are looking to stock this one for the substantial price of fully $20,820 each, or 1.7 million yen. They’re gearing it toward businesses, which is pretty good, because they’re likely to be the only ones able–or willing–to drop better than 20 grand on a television that’s smaller than a lot of 2D home theater versions (let alone other 3D televisions that require glasses) you can get today, not to mention that the Dimenco model has fewer features.

If you cut that price tag by, say, 90 percent, you might see these really take off in sales. Granted, a lenticular display is somewhat of a crap shoot unless you’re staring it dead-on, but still, glasses-free 3D isn’t a bad idea on the whole.

But what price is too high for 3D viewing without glasses? That’s a question I leave to you guys, so hit the comments section below and tell me what you’d pay for a 3D LCD without the need for glasses.
