Google I/O 2011: Google Nexus 3 to Spearhead the Ice Cream Sandwich Launch?

Andy Rubin Says Nexus S Will Keep Having Successors; We Still Remember Google Once Said the Nexus One Was a One-Time Deal

Remember back when Eric Schmidt said that the Google Nexus One was a one time deal? But then Google and Samsung launched the Nexus S, which was apparently not named the Nexus Two because Samsung is second to none in the known universe. And guess what, a Google Nexus 3 is going to be launched later this year, Andy Rubin says.

Without telling us who’s going to make it, although the usual suspects are the same, HTC, Samsung, Motorola and LG, the Android boss said that the Nexus 3 is definitely coming later this year. This is what Andy Rubin declared at Google I/O 2011:

The Nexus has been the thing that we used to set the bar, and there’s always going to be new ones coming out in the market. We’ll make an announcement at some point in the future.

Since HTC made the first Nexus, and Samsung came up with the Nexus S a year later, can we expect Motorola or LG to design the next-gen Nexus 3?

Naturally we expect the Nexus 3 to come out in Q4 2011, about a year later after its predecessor, and, just like the Nexus S was the first handset in the world to sport Gingerbread right out the box, the same thing will most likely happen for Ice Cream Sandwich with the Nexus 3.

The Nexus 3 will probably spearhead the Ice Cream Sandwich deployment and fight against the iPhone 5 for smartphone supremacy in the upcoming holiday shopping season. We’ll certainly keep our eyes peeled for more Nexus 3 information for you guys, so in the mean time make sure you follow our Twitter accounts and subscribe to our feed to get more details on Google’s plans for its Android future as they come fresh from this year’s Google I/O edition.
