Google I/O 2011: Google Music Beta Website Goes Live & Is Accepting Invitation Requests

Coming Ahead Of The Expected Announcement, Google Music Beta Site Goes Live & Reveals Service Details

Google I/O 2011 is just beginning and while there are several announcements we are hoping to hear today, it seems that the Music Beta service is going to be one of them. Of course, it will be nicer to hear the official word from Google, however in the meantime we have what we can see from the Music Beta website, which is slowly coming online.

At present, those who surf on over to www.music.google.com can go ahead and request an invitation to use the service. Curiously though, the site notes that the service will be “available free for a limited time.” But perhaps a little nicer is the about page which has revealed details to include the description of;

A better way to play your music.

Upload your personal music collection to listen anywhere,
keep everything in sync, and forget the hassle of cables and files.

Otherwise, additional bullet point style details are listed as being able to;

  • Listen anywhere, even offline.
  • Stay in sync, without the hassle.
  • Your collection, now in one place.
  • Mix it up.

Breaking these points down a bit further and we learn that the offline playback will come in the form of specific albums, artists and playlists. And in addition, any song that you recently played will “automatically be available offline.”

Next up is staying in sync, which sounds like it will be nice once your collection is uploaded. As to this, it should also be nice for those who jump from device to device or regularly use a smartphone and tablet as your collection along with your playlists will always be available and always be the same regardless of which device you grab that day.

In terms of your collection, again, the initial upload may be of issue for those with larger collections. That aside though, you will be able to upload from multiple folders on your computer and even multiple computers. In other words, Google Music should consolidate your collection. And then once the initial upload is complete, any new tracks that are added to your folders will be automatically synced.

And lastly, the Music Beta site will allow you to manage your collection as well as use a feature called Instant Mix which is described as allowing you to “automatically build new playlists of songs from your collection that go great together.”
