Nokia Has Dual-Screen Naked-Eye 3D Windows Phone In the Works
Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft sure runs deep, as recent patent filings suggest that the company is not only working on Windows Phone handsets, but dual-screen Windows Phones and tablets.

Nokia has recently filed for a patent for an “autostereoscopic rendering and display apparatus,” which basically means glasses-free 3D. What’s more interesting is that the patent filing includes images for what seems to be a dual-screen device. Nokia’s planned dual-screen smartphone features 3D imaging without the need for 3D glasses, and the device will also come with eye-level tracking, which will be helpful in projecting the 3D image such that it appears properly from the perspective of the user regardless of position.
Aside from the planned dual-screen 3D smartphone, Nokia is also said to have tablets in the works, which will run Windows 8. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop himself said that Nokia was currently assessing its strategy in the tablet market. For now, though, Nokia is not likely to have a tablet launched by 2012 (which is Microsoft’s planned launch for Windows 8), but rather by 2013.
Is a dual-screen 3D smartphone something to be excited about? We’ve seen this before–to some extent–with the Sharp Galapagos and the Kyocera Echo (sans the 3D). But will a Windows Phone 7 dual-screen smartphone with Nokia hardware quality be noteworthy? We’ll have to wait and see.
