iOS 4.3.3 Untethered Jailbreak Available: PwnageTool 4.3.3.1 & Redsn0w 0.9.6rc16

iPhone Dev Team Updates Jailbreak Tools Updated; They Work on iPhone 3G, GSM iPhone 4, iPad 1, iPod touch 3G & 4G, But Not the iPad 2

Apple released iOS 4.3.3 / 4.2.8 earlier this week to address that location-tracking issue that could potentially affect an iDevice user’s privacy and, naturally, the jailbreak tools were almost immediately updated to support the new firmware. And yes, it’s still an untethered jailbreak as Apple didn’t seem interested to patch the security hole that allows it in this iOS update.

The iPhone Dev Team released the new PwnageTool 4.3.3.1 and Redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 versions which can now offer you the untethered jailbreak you’re looking for on the following devices: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 (the GSM version), iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, iPad 1 and the Apple TV 2G. Of course, the iPad 2 is still left out and we have no idea when a public jailbreak tool will be available for Apple’s latest device. In fact here are some things to keep in mind when considering jailbreaking your device:

1. ultrasn0w unlockers must stay away from redsn0w! Use only a custom IPSW to update to 4.3.3, to avoid updating your baseband.
2. ultrasn0w has been updated to v1.2.3 to be compatible with iOS 4.3.3 and earlier (the ultrasn0w update does not include any new baseband support!). Please reboot your iPhone using the normal “slide to power off” swipe after installing ultrasn0w 1.2.3.
3. By popular demand, redsn0w now allows you to enable multitasking gestures (although most will find it useful only on iPads).
4. iPad2 update: The iPad2 jailbreak remains under development. As you may know, the original exploit @comex developed in the first week of the iPad2 release was mysteriously fixed by Apple within days of its development. Partly because of this, don’t expect much public discussion of the iPad2 jailbreak until it’s actually finished and ready for release (and please avoid asking about it). In all likelihood, it will be a userland exploit like the first (unreleased) one, not dependent on bootrom dumps. The first one can’t be released even for those with the original 4.3 firmware due to legal (distribution) reasons.

As always, when it comes to jailbreaking your iDevices, make sure you follow closely the instructions on the screen and make sure you back up your important information before going though such a procedure just to stay on the safe side. We’ll never advise for such procedures anyway, so you’ll be the one to bear all responsibility for whatever you put your iOS device through.
