Asus Says Eee Pad Transformer Shortage Issue is Due to Demand
The Asus Eee Pad Transformer seems to be in shortage since its launch this April. While earlier news indicated that this was due to supply shortages, Asus has chimed in, and said the Transformer is actually selling like hotcakes.

Asus has basically denied that the company is facing supply shortages, and is disputing the earlier rumors that Asus Eee Pad Transformer parts are in short supply. In fact, Asus says it will meet its target production of 100,000 units of the Eee Pad Transformer this month.
Netbooknews got in touch with representatives from Asus in Taiwan, who were kind enough to clarify the issue. It seems that someone had been misquoted, since ASUSTek spokesperson David Chang said the company “will see a significant alleviation in the month of June” in response to an inquiry regarding the shortage. This does not necessarily mean that Asus is having supply chain problems, though. In fact, the company attributes it to exceedingly high demand. “It really depends on the demand. The current demand surpasses our expectations by far,” Chang adds.
Maybe someone left out a few zeros in Asus’ claimed output for the month (100,000 vs the earlier-cited 10,000).
Whatever the cause of shortage, we know one thing for sure. We like our hotcakes as much as we like gadgets. So, Asus, please make sure you have enough of the Eee Pad Transformer, so we can get our hands on the hybrid tablet/netbook soon. If the Eee Pad Transformer is, indeed, selling like hotcakes, then maybe we can have one just in time for breakfast.

This is nonsense. Asus has not met their commitments to retailers and that is not because demand is higher than expected. Amazon sent out notices on Friday to people who had ordered the transformer last week. The notice cancelled customer orders saying “We’re unable to fulfill your order for the items listed below because they aren’t available from the supplier any longer. As a result, we cancelled them from your order and your credit card wasn’t charged.

Retailers don’t cancel hot selling items just because they sell out as fast as the retailer can get them in. A retailer cancels orders when a manufacturer can’t provide reliable information about supply and delivery. Asus denied the first reports that there was a component shortage on 5/3 and one of their Marketing Managers told AndroidPolice that the supply shortage was due to additional testing to “ensure an unrivalled user-experience. This has resulted in delays to a number of shipments”.
Most likely Asus found a problem with the new tablet and is choosing to fix it before a wide product release. That’s a good thing but it would be nice if they wouldn’t put out silly explanations. This is definitely going to be an extremely popular product and there are a lot of us following and waiting for it to be released. But the truth is apparently only a very few units were supplied to retailiers, just enough to meet their declared release date.
