PlayStation Network Down Update: Following PSN Outage a New Hack Shuts Down Sony Online Entertainment

Sony Gets Hit Again by Hackers, 12,700 non-U.S. Credit Card Numbers In the Hands of Attackers; PSN Services Still Down

Kaz Hirai and Co. apologized and bowed before their customers, although that might not be enough to satisfy the security needs of millions of PlayStation Network subscribers. And just when we thought that things are going to turn to regular business when it comes to Sony’s PlayStation gaming services, it looks like Sony gets hit again with another similar attack.

Sony announced today that hackers managed to access and steal sensitive private data of 25 million more users and it all happened a day before the PlayStation Network attacks. Among the lost data Sony said that the hackers that accessed the Sony Online Entertainment PC games network were able to get 10,700 direct debit records from non-U.S. customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain and 12,700 non-U.S. credit or debit card numbers.

Sony is clearly going through some rough times as we speak and we can’t but wonder when and how will the hackers actually use the information they were able to steal.

There’s no telling when Sony’s gaming services will be back up, and no matter what compensation plans the company will offer following these serious cyber attacks you should make sure you change all your passwords that you used prior to the attacks not to mention double checking your bank and credit card statements to make sure the wrong people aren’t spending your hard-earned cash.

Sony’s Online Entertainment games on Facebook have also gone down until further notice, which only shows how serious the whole matter is. The company is yet to respond to the U.S. Congress, and word on the street is that Sony will not testify before the House subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade, but it will respond to the questions formally asked last week. We’ll be back as this situation unfolds, but in the mean time let us know whether you have been directly affected by the hacks directed at Sony, and keep following us on Twitter and via our feed for more PSN and Sony online gaming news!
