Two New iPhone 5 Versions in the Works Ahead of Fall Release Date? [New iPhone 5 Rumors Say Apple Is Building Two Devices: “Standard” & “Pro”; No Specs & Features Available Yet to Tell Them Apart]
We saw a lot of iPhone 5 rumors recently and the latest one is saying that Apple could be building not one but two distinct iPhone 5 models, a “Standard” version and a “Pro” model. That sort of talk goes well with previous rumors that were saying Apple will introduce a cheaper iPhone in the future, the kind of device that would be able to compete against the plethora of dirt-cheap, ultra-affordable Android smartphones that are taking over the world.

Today’s rumors come from an employee of an Apple parts supplier. He is basically saying, without actually revealing any specs and features for any of these two devices, that Apple is ordering similar parts for the production of the iPhone 5 Standard and Pro. The difference apparently is that some of these components are “the very best you can get right now,” for the Pro version while some “are just the standard version” that would probably be fitted on the iPhone 5 Standard.
After the success of the iPad that came in six different versions that would fit various budgets, a cheaper iPhone 5 would certainly be most welcomed. Apple would need such a device, capable of still offering a great iOS experience, while being a little more affordable than the Pro version, to fight Google in the cheap smartphone business.
The iPhone 5 Standard might just be that iPhone mini or nano device that we talked about it the past. It could also be that iPhone 4S we’ve seen recently, a slightly upgraded iPhone 4 that would look and feel similar to the iPhone 4 but pack better components. In fact, considering that Apple will keep the iPhone 4 around for one more year to sell it for less alongside the iPhone 5, we could also assume that the upcoming $99 iPhone 4 of the future could actually be an iPhone 4S or, why not, an iPhone 5 Standard.
The high-end product would therefore be the totally new iPhone 5, which could go through another important redesign process or not, but which keep selling at “regular” iPhone prices. Naturally we’ll be back with more news on the iPhone 5 since we have a few months to go until this baby gets released.
