Sharp Takes 156 LCD Monitors And Turns A Room Into A Monitor

Sharp's 5D Miracle Tour Puts Video On Every Part Of An Entire Room

We’ve seen a lot of amazing audio / visual products here, and maybe the Holy Grail of the audio visual world is the Holodeck from Star Trek: The Next Generation, an experience so immersive that you can actually walk into it and interact with it. Well, we just got one step closer thanks to the crew out at Sharp, who took fully 156 LCD displays and created the 5D Miracle Tour, a room full of video.

Just look at it. We’ve got the concept pic right above this paragraph. That’s 156 Sharp LCD displays operating in concert–156 60 inch PN-V601s, to be more specific. The layout uses 24 displays on the left and right walls, while the floor, ceiling and facing wall each get 36. The end result is that you get a seamless display measuring somewhere around 200 to 300 inches wide on all sides, which is an impressive feat no matter how you look at it. Meanwhile, an image transmission system hidden nearby keeps the relevant images coming up on the displays in front of you.

This is really more of an exhibition of what a product can do as opposed to an actual product itself, but basically, this is what you could do if you got 156 Sharp LCD televisions together and put them all in a grid together. Imagine what your favorite movie would look like on that!

And if you want to check this wonder out for yourself, you’ll have to head out to Japan, where so many of the world’s great electronic wonders have had their start. The Sharp 5D Miracle Tour is currently on display out at the Hui Ten Bosch Theme Park in Sasebo City. For those not familiar with Japanese geography, that’s reportedly in Nagasaki.

I don’t know about you, but if I could redo my basement in LCD screens, I’d probably never leave my house again, living off a series of food deliveries. Now all they need to do is put a layer of plexiglas over the floor LCD displays so you can walk out into it.
