Redbox To Start Offering Video Games Throughout The US [After A Round Of Testing In Select US Cities, Redbox Announces That They Will Start Offering Video Games Nationwide In June]

Redbox has announced that they will begin offering video games in their rental stations around the United States in June, a move that we’ve known was coming for a while. After all, with the death of traditional rental stores, gamers need a new place where they rent games purely for the easy achievements and trophies.

And that’s where Redbox comes in. During their testing phase, Redbox only ran video games in machines they had in big cities like New York or Chicago. It seems that the testing phase went well, however, because they announced today that they would be bringing video games to 21,000 machines across the US starting June 17.

It’ll cost you $2 a night to rent a video game from them, up from the $1 it costs to rent a standard DVD and the $1.50 it costs to rent a Blu-Ray disc. Presumably, the rental model for games works the same way as it does for DVDs: hold onto the game for 30 days and the game is yours to keep as you’ve paid the full retail price of $60 for it already.

While I’m typically critical of traditional rental businesses (and love services like Gamefly and Netflix), renting games through Redbox actually doesn’t seem like too bad an idea, so long as you don’t plan on keeping them for more than a weekend or so. What do you think? Will you rent games from Redbox, or will you stick with Gamefly or your local rental stores? Do you even rent video games? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
