PlayStation Network Down Update: SOE Says Its Customer Data Was Not Compromised [Sony Online Entertainment Says That Their Customers' Personal Data Is Safe From Theft After PSN Attacks]

Sony’s history making issues with attacks against the PlayStation Network have affected an unknown amount of their 75 million+ user base, but if you’re a Sony Online Entertainment customer, you can breathe easy tonight. After having to deal with attacks on their own servers last week, Sony Online Entertainment took to the forums today to assure fans that their private data was not compromised… well, kind of.

“We wanted to update you on the status of our examination of the SOE system intrusion we announced last week,” an SOE community relations rep said on the forums. “We have been conducting a thorough investigation and, to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information got out to any unauthorized person or persons. We are continuing that investigation and monitoring the situation carefully; should the situation change, we will — of course – promptly notify you.”

So, they aren’t entirely sure that your personal information wasn’t stolen, but so far, things are looking good. Of course, with as many customers as Sony Online Entertainment has, I imagine it would be impossible to examine every account in a week’s time, so if account information was indeed stolen, it may be a while before anyone is certain of the extent of the damage done.

If SOE does in fact realize that personal information has been compromised as a result of the attacks, we’ll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, savor being the only Sony customers capable of playing something online.
