PlayStation 3 Price Cut Coming Soon? New PS3 Models Approved By FCC [Sony Gets Two New PS3 Models Approved By FCC, Does This Mean Cheaper Parts & Incoming Price Cut]
From my perspective, it seems that Sony is quickly losing goodwill and customer loyalty over the PSN outage, which seems to just be going on and on. For those of you who still do care, Sony quietly submitted four new models of PS3 to the FCC to get approval to sell them in the United States. It includes two models of differing hard drive sizes, as well as two developer debug models.

Unfortunately, not much can be garnered from the FCC regulatory filing. Sony did submit a drawing of the bottom of the PS3 where the FCC stickers will be placed, and the bottom (footprint) of the device looks the same to the regular PS3 Slim to me. I suspect that it will look the same as the PS3 Slim, with changes made to the “guts” of the PS3.
It’s possible that Sony has managed to get an even cheaper production process for the PS3, and whatever they changed forced them to get new FCC approval. I don’t know if this means if we’ll see a PS3 price cut or not. Sony could be happy with the price point of the PS3 – and just net the profits for themselves.
The last hardware revision we saw to the PS3 was last summer, when we saw them introduce the new 160GB and 320GB Slim models. Those devices carried the model numbers CECH-25xxA while the new PS3 hardware seen in the FCC filing contains the model numbers CECH-3001A or CECH-3001B. Will we see a PS3 price cut announced at E3? That’s certainly a possibility.
There’s always the possibility that these new PS3s are the ones that can, you know, get on PSN. Zing, I’ll be here all week.
