Google Releases Google Docs App For Android [Google Docs Arrives For Android In The Form Of A Dedicated App, Will Allow For Document Creation, Editing & More]

Google has recently released another app for the Android platform. The app is Google Docs and currently available for download from the Android Market.

And while some may be surprised to see a dedicated app as opposed to a web based app, it is ready and available for those who want. Or more specifically, the Google Docs app is available for those running Android 2.1 or later. That said, the app is a free download and will allow you to create, edit, upload and share docs directly from your phone. In addition, there is a widget and integration with the camera and Gmail. But first, the feature set;

  • Designed for Android to save you time finding your docs
  • Edits to your documents appear to collaborators in seconds
  • Make quick changes to spreadsheets
  • View your documents, PDFs, images and more.
  • Upload and convert files to the Google Docs format
  • Take a photo of printed text and convert it to a Google document
  • Share docs with your phone’s contacts

Of course, most of that above list would be expected in a proper Google Docs app. As for the widget, that seems on the simple side (though it does look rather nice if I do say so myself) but does allow for the basics. The widget will allow you to quickly launch your starred documents as well as take a picture to upload to your account and also create a new document.

In terms of the integration with the camera. As noted, you will be able to launch that from the widget, but you can also choose to create a “Document from Photo” from within the app itself. The interesting part about the camera though, any images that you upload can be turned into editable Google documents by using “optical character recognition (OCR).” Basically, this will allow you to snap a picture of text and have Google Docs write it out so you can edit it. The one catch though, at present it will not “recognize handwriting or some fonts.” Though on that note, Google did state that “it will get better over time.”
