Apple Opens Up In Terms Of Why It Took So Long To Release The White iPhone 4 [The White iPhone 4 Was Delayed Because “It’s Not As Simple As Making Something White" & It Needed UV Protection]

We saw the news earlier this morning — the white iPhone 4 is going to be available for sale as of tomorrow (April 28th) morning. And while we read the news and were happy to finally be able to put this series of rumors to rest, we were left wondering the reason behind all the delays.

As it turns out, “it was challenging.” Well, that is what Apple senior vide president Phil Schiller had to say when he was interviewed along with Steve Jobs by Ina Fried over at All Things D. As for the reason behind that comment, Schiller went on to further note that there was issues surrounding the color of the phone and some of the internal components and some unexpected interactions between the two. It seems that because of the white exterior, the handset needed a little bit extra care in terms of UV protection. According to Schiller;

“It’s not as simple as making something white. There’s a lot more that goes into both the material science of it–how it holds up over time… but also in how it all works with the sensors.”

Basically, it seems that the sun was causing issues with the light colored exterior. And of course, Schiller went on to note that by waiting they were able to deliver a handset that will live up to expectations. Sure, but we would not have expected anything less, after all, the tech scene was rough enough on Apple because of the delays — can you imagine the bad PR that would have come if the handset released and had problems.

In addition, Steve Jobs talked about how the work that went into making the white iPhone 4 affected the company broadly. Of course, by that we can only think that the making of the white iPhone helped make the white iPad.
