Motorola Xoom Sales Significantly Lower Than Expected: 25,000 Units?
We found the Xoom to be a great tablet and certainly a worthy iPad 2 competitor, after seeing it at CES and MWC this year, not to mention reviewing it for you guys. But was it a spectacular device for consumers? Did Android fans pick up a Xoom as soon as it became available in stores?

A very grim report from analysts, which don’t happen to get it right all the time, concludes that Motorola’s Xoom was a flop when it comes to the cash it brought in. Trip Chowdry from Global Equities says that Motorola produced anywhere from 500,000 to 800,000 Xoom units and sold just 5-15% of them. That translates into up to 120,000 Xoom sales according to him. But the worst-of-the-worst case scenario basically says that Motorola could have sold just 25,000 Xoom units from launch. All you need is some simple math to come up with that number considering the data offered by Chowdry.
Well, whether it’s 25,000 or 120,000, things will not be looking good for Motorola. If the company failed to convince people to buy the main iPad 2 rival out there before the iPad 2 came, and thereafter, I can’t see Moto making a better job at selling the Xoom the minute such a low sales number would be confirmed. After all people are attracted to success too, and should they hear the Xoom is a potential flop, they may very well steer away of it.
I can’t wait to see Motorola’s upcoming quarterly earnings report to get more details on these Xoom sales and we’ll certainly follow this tablet in the future’s performance in the future. And I’m sure that Apple’s main rivals coming up with a Honeycomb iPad 2 alternative this year will be watching closely. After all some of them still have time to correct potential Xoom flaws, if there were any, that prevented people from buying Motorola tablets like crazy. Or maybe did it have anything to do with the price?
