PlayStation Network Down for a Third Maintenance Day; External Intrusion to Blame [Sony Explains PlayStation Network & Qriocity Shut Down; Services Turn On Not Explained]

Yes, folks, the Sony PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are shut down for maintenance services and we have no real idea on why that is happening. What’s even more strange is that it all started last Wednesday, so we’re looking at a third day of outages. That’s bad news for anyone interested in any online activity from his or her PlayStation and we’re already getting plenty of comments in to complain about the whole situation.

Sony has not been very revealing but it did post an update on its PlayStation blog. Apparently some sort of “external intrusion” is to blame for the whole outage. Someone somewhere has interfered with Sony’s PSN and Qriocity and Sony has no clue on how to fix it, or the whole fixing is a lot more difficult than initially expected. That’s what our bullshit translator is able to tell us, but here’s Sony’s carefully planned, one-paragraph explanation:

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not mad at Sony since I’m not affected by the situation. But it’s pretty interesting to see a giant like Sony shut down their services after some external smart people managed to take advantage of some sort of vulnerability. I guess Sony managed to beat Geohot in court (or didn’t they?), but that doesn’t mean their PlayStation environment is not being targeted by others, not that the two events have to be, in any way, linked to each other. But we won’t speculate on this matter as we have for more convincing evidence of what has happened.

In case you have any information on why Sony has shut down its PSN and music services three days ago, by all means, share them with us. Otherwise stay tunned for more PSN and Qriocity updates.

This is what Anonymous have really accomplished…Sony’s customers are now apparently a favorite victim for script kiddies with nothing better to do. They were inspired by Anon’s attack and now Sony’s network (and all the paid customers who use it) are at the mercy of every cyber-lowlife with a desire to do harm and no better target to hit.

How are these freaks not terrorists, again?
