Amazon Updates Kindle For Android, Adds New Features & New Support

Kindle For Android Updated, Now Supports Honeycomb Tablets, Has Integrated Shopping & More

Just yesterday we saw Amazon announce that the Kindle Store had come available in Germany. And with that came word that Amazon.de was selling the hardware Kindle and that support was also going to be arriving for the mobile apps.

Well, as it turns out, Amazon also updated the Kindle for Android app and while the German language support was added — that was just a small change as compared to the rest. First of all, the Kindle for Android app is now at version 3.0.0.56, comes in requiring 4.7MB for installation and in need of Android 2.1 or later.

But getting back to this most recent update — it has brought support for Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

“We’ve taken all the features customers love about Kindle for Android, and created a beautiful new user interface and a seamless shopping experience tailored to the look and feel of Honeycomb tablets,” said Dorothy Nicholls, Director, Amazon Kindle

In addition, other new features include;

  • Seamless integrated shopping experience tailored for tablets gives you quick access to personalized recommendations, customer reviews, and more
  • Refined newspaper and magazine layout including full color images
  • Ability to pause, resume download at any time
  • Enhanced word look-up capability (for Android-based phones and tablets) with built-in dictionary with over 250,000 entries and definitions.

Of course, the tried and true features such as Whispersyc have remained in place. And who could imagine an app update with the more general bug fixes, yup, those were included as well. With that, the Kindle for Android app remains available as a free download.

Otherwise, we expect Amazon to come forward with another update sometime later this year that will bring the support for the recently announced Kindle Lending Library. And for those who missed that, just a few days back Amazon announced they had partnered with Overdrive and will begin offering the option to borrow library books from more than 11,000 local libraries.
