New MacBook Air Laptops to Feature Faster Samsung SSDs
The 2010 MacBook Air is, without a doubt, a hot Apple product. The new Airs launched by Apple in late 2010 brought us a total redesign and the new ultra-portable machines quickly became best-seller computers. In fact Apple’s upcoming quarterly earnings report should reveal more details about Mac sales and MacBook Air sales in particular.

We’re yet to see a 2011 MacBook Air refresh but it looks like Apple has already made some changes to its Air line of notebooks. The company has apparently decided to replace the Toshiba SSDs that were first used to equip the laptops, with faster Samsung SSDs. We have no idea when the change occurred but it looks like Apple is certainly interested in making the Air as competitive as possible.
The current Samsung SSD, model number SM128C will offer you 261.1MB/s and 209.6MB/s read and write speeds which are significantly faster than its Toshiba counterpart, model number TS128C, capable of 209.8MB/s and 175MB/s read and write speeds.
Apple didn’t really announce the bump in specs, although such details rarely get unnoticed and it would be interesting to see whether the company would replace “old” Toshiba SSDs with the new Samsung SSDs. After all early 2010 MacBook Air buyers will probably want the extra bump in speed too, especially if they tend to forge their Airs in battle on a regular basis.
On the other hand the Air line is not a powerhorse computer family, or at least not yet. That means most Air users might not really be able to tell the difference between the performances of the two SSDs. In case they would, they probably should be looking for a more powerful 2011 MacBook Pro notebook instead.
Getting back to the 2011 MacBook Air refresh, we have no idea yet what the new Airs will have to offer later this year, and we’re yet to hear rumors about the next-gen of ultra-portable Apple computers, so stick around for more details in the months to come.
