Sony Plans Release Of Free Crackle App For iOS Hardware
Admittedly, in a world where Hulu and Netflix and YouTube pretty much own the video market, we don’t think about Crackle very often. And frankly, that’s a shame–I first discovered Crackle thanks to a terrific show called Star-ving, which featured former Married…With Children star David “Bud Bundy” Faustino and his cohort Corin “Parker Lewis” Nemec (who apparently went on to discover fame by starring in a series of direct to video horror flicks). But as awesome as Star-ving was, the news that Crackle will soon be a free app for iOS devices is even better.

Crackle is, basically, Hulu, though it deals a lot more with Sony properties, including movies like Flatliners, Joe Dirt, and [Rec], as well as TV shows like Damages, Benson and even some anime like Blood+ and Air Master, as well as, a variety of stuff you won’t see anywhere else like Little Big Prius, Fear Clinic (which I had previously thought only available at FearNet) of course, Star-ving. The best part is that the content is free, as the service is supported by advertising.
Previously Crackle had been a Flash-only operation, so iOS users were pretty much left out in the cold, but this move allows them access to the wide array of content currently available.
Frankly, I like this. Sure, some will protest about Sony’s corporate nature and the like, but frankly, I like movies, I like TV shows, I really like original content, and I don’t mind sitting through a brief pitch for toilet paper or a new car or what have you to get hands on same. And while watching video on even an iPad can be a little dicey, it’s still going to give you plenty of fine video to watch, especially if you’re on the road and sorely need a bit of entertainment.
