Nokia's Ovi Store Reaches Five Million Daily Downloads
When you think of apps, chances are the first thing you think of either has to do with fruit or robots. Seriously, it’s either Apple’s iTunes or the confederation that is the Android Market. But Nokia wants to get a little piece of that market for itself, and its Ovi Store is doing a pretty nice job of getting people in the door. They opened up two years ago, and already they’ve reached the five million daily download mark.

The news came hot on the heels of two new smartphone announcements that we actually already covered, and as it turns out, the Ovi Store (which started out as an oft-maligned venture that people had a tough time getting around in) rejiggered its early experiences and put out at pretty nice showing. So nice, in fact, that it took them from opening to last October to hit 2.3 million in a day, but hit three million a day just a month later. Now, only six months after hitting 2.3 million, it’s more than doubled to five million a day.
And what’s more, Nokia and AT&T even set up a contest designed to get more stuff in the Ovi Store–it only recently ended, but it was geared toward developers, getting them in the door and developing apps for the Ovi Store. The four top winners will share a pot of $5.8 million, and also be featured in future marketing projects by Nokia this year, and another 51 developers will split $4 million amongst them, making this nearly a ten million dollar pot.
Sure, the Ovi Store is still lagging way behind its primary competitors–while the Ovi Store has about 40,000 items available, the Android Market packs nearly four times that many at 150,000, and the Apple App Store packs over eight times that many at 350,000. Still though, it’s definitely a start in the right direction, and the Ovi Store might just end up a solid competitor before too much longer has passed.
