LG Thrive & LG Phoenix Android 2.2 Smartphones Announced By AT&T, Both Set To Arrive On April 17th

AT&T Announces The $179.99 Pre-Paid LG Thrive & The $49.99 Post-Paid LG Phoenix

AT&T has announced two new additions to their device lineup, though while there are two phones and two names, technically speaking there is only one phone. You see, AT&T announced the LG Thrive and the LG Phoenix. They are the same device in terms of looks and specs, though they do come in different colors and they are each destined for a different market.

The LG Thrive is the silver model and it is for the pre-paid market, in other words, it will be an AT&T GoPhone. Coincidentally, the LG Thrive will be the first pre-paid smartphone available with AT&T. And then on the other hand there is the LG Phoenix, which is the blue model and arrives for the post-paid market.

The LG Thrive is priced at $179.99 (contract free) and the LG Phoenix is priced at $49.99 (on a two-year agreement). Bottom line here, you have the same handset and have the option to choose if you want post-paid or pre-paid.

That said, in terms of features of the phone. The handset arrives with a 3.2 inch (320 x 480) touchscreen display, 600MHz processor, 160MB internal storage, microSD card slot (with 2GB memory card included), GPS, HSDPA 7.2 3G, Wi-Fi, Stereo Bluetooth, 3.5mm headphone jack, a 1500 mAh battery and a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus. In addition, the handset is running Android 2.2 Froyo.

And speaking in terms of the calling and data plan on the pre-paid side, the Thrive will have the following options available;

Voice:

  • Smartphone $0.10 per minute plan
  • Smartphone $2 per day Unlimited Talk and Text plan

Data:

  • $5 for 10MB
  • $15 for 100MB
  • $25 for 500MB

All said and done, while not the highest spec’d devices, it is nice to see AT&T offering one handset both as pre-paid and post-paid. If nothing else, this allows the customer to make the pre-paid or post-paid choice based on what they want to pay as opposed to the phone they want to use.
