Andy Rubin Promoted To Senior Vice President

As Google CEO Larry Page Reshuffles Management Team, Android Boss Rubin Is Promoted To New SVP Title

Just a few days ago, Dr. Eric Schmidt stepped down from his role as Google CEO, returning the role to co-founder Larry Page. Google underwent a huge executive reshuffle today, and one of the changes is that Andy Rubin, best known as the “Android guy” is now a Senior Vice President in the company.

A big part of the Page reshuffle is a new emphasis on efficiency. As Senior Vice President, Rubin will report directly to Page. That makes sense. Even if they don’t’ make much (any?) money on Android, Android certainly is a major, high profile Google product.

Rubin was in the news this week when he spoke out about the “State of Android”, and addressed some complaints about the operating system, including fragmentation and claims that Android was moving towards being a “closed-source” operating system.

Andy Rubin founded Danger, Inc. (the people behind the Sidekick) which was later bought by Microsoft. He had a falling out with Microsoft, the story goes, and left to form Android, Inc., which was purchased by Google, and Rubin has led the Android team ever since.

It seems that all the major product heads now report directly to Page. Salar Kamangar (of YouTube) and Sundar Pichai (of Chrome web browser) were also promoted to Senior Vice President and promote directly to Page. The loser of the reshuffle may be Jonathan Rosenburg. According to the Wall Street Journal, Rosenburg was a Senior Vice President and many of the newly promoted SVPs reported to him. He announced he was leaving the company.

    1. Lance Williams says:

Better check your facts on Andy’s work history… He left Danger, Inc in 2004 after the venture capitalists wanted to go in a different direction than Andy did. He left, took some time off and then started Android, which was bought by Google in July of 2005. No involvement with Microsoft in Andy’s decision to leave Danger. Microsoft did not have any interest in buying Danger, Inc. until 2008, 4 years after Andy left the company…
