Consumer Reports Gives The Apple iPad 2 Top Honors
With the tablet wars continuing to play out, Consumer Reports is giving the iPad 2 top honors but at the same time stating that it is facing stiff competition. The recent report comes as Consumer Reports has tested the 10 “most-promising tablet computers.”

The current batch of testing included models from Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung and ViewSonic. Also interesting to note is that this testing included “several” models from Apple. It looks like those included both the original iPad as well as the iPad 2. And likely coming with little surprise to anyone following the tech scene, the iPad 2 was noted as leading the market.
“So far, Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium priced,” said Paul Reynolds, Electronics Editor at Consumer Reports.
Still, while singing the praise of the iPad 2 at the moment, they were also quick to note that things will “likely” change once we “see more competitive pricing in tablets as other models begin to hit the market.” In other words, Apple needs to keep innovating to stay on top.
More specifically, the 32GB iPad 2 with Wi-Fi plus 3G took the top honors with a mention that it scored “Excellent in nearly every category.” In terms of the testing, that included 17 criteria ranging from touchscreen responsiveness, versatility, portability, screen glare and ease of use.
Furthermore, the original iPad was not all that shabby either and was noted as outscoring “many of the other models.” And for the Android fans, the Motorola Xoom was deemed the “chief rival” of the iPad. And nicely done, the Xoom was tied with the original iPad in that it also outscored many others.
But in the end, Consumer Reports offered the following advice when choosing a tablet. Make sure to consider that “many features are almost universal” and perhaps a little more important when it comes to spending a large sum of money — “future-proofing will pay off.” And lastly, they noted that “you get what you pay for.”
