Star Wars: The Complete Saga On Blu-Ray Coming September 16th [Star Wars Blu-Ray Kits Get Release Date, Start Standing In Line Now]
In this day and age, it’s odd when something isn’t out for Blu-Ray but Star Wars has yet to be ported to the high-def media format (although I believe that HD versions of the movies are out there on HDNet and other HD TV channels). George Lucas announced that Star Wars was going Blu-Ray last year at Celebration V, a quasi-regular Star Wars convention. Now, after much speculation, it’s been announced that the Blu-Ray sets are coming out on September 16th.

Previously, Amazon had listed on their pre-order page that they were coming out about a week and a half later on September 27th. But, this September 16th date is coming out with official announcements from StarWars.com, so it appears to be the correct date. Also, it originally seemed that just a Blu-Ray set with all six movies, dubbed “Star Wars: The Complete Saga” would be released. However, they’ll also be releasing two additional kits dubbed “Star Wars: Original Trilogy” and “Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy”.
If you’re a “Greedo Shot First” perfectionist, note that these will be 1080p versions of the special editions not the original theatrical releases. Even though they have released DVD versions of the original theatrical cuts, George Lucas said at the Celebration V announcements that it would “cost too much” to convert the theatrical cuts to 1080p. As I wrote back May when first covering this, you’d think that there would be enough interest in anything Star Wars to make it pay for itself, but I guess not.
Amazon.com has the “Complete Saga” set going for $90 while two Trilogy by themselves are going for $45 each. In addition to the movies, they’ll also becoming with tons and tons of featurettes and special features.
