AirPlay In 1080p Thanks To Homebrew Concept [Mac Buffs Eric Govoruhk and Kelly McAteer Develop Simple Way To Stream 1080p From An iPad 2]

For anyone who’s ever used an AirPlay system and then been gravely disappointed to discover that it only replays in 720p, even when you’re playing from a 1080p source, I feel your pain. But I’m not the only one who felt it, and for a couple folks–Eric Govoruhk and Kelly McAteer, by name–they went and did something about it. Thanks to them, we now know a fairly easy way to get some serious upconvert going into the AirPlay system.

The story behind the concept is almost unsettlingly simple–basically, Govoruhk and McAteer were set to the task of helping clients with their presentations, and discovered that many of them favored the Mac’s Keynote Presentations system. Some used Macs for the program, and others used iPads with VGA adapters. And indeed, they did the job nicely, but it still came down to being tethered by a cable. So the duo started considering what they could do, and discovered a strange, unwieldy, but still very useful system to improve the whole thing.

They combined a wireless HDMI transmitter, a USB battery pack, and an iPad 2 (and a few other components) to get the result, and though the overall package looks pretty rough–it’s all contained in a clear housing on the back side of the iPad 2, approximately doubling its thickness, but since the iPad 2 was already pretty thin it doesn’t make it that unwieldy–the results are undeniable.

From there, Govorukh and McAteer are looking to modify this further, possibly even going into a belt pack from there, but frankly, Apple needs to be paying attention to this. This is a terrific idea, done relatively simply, with some off the shelf components. It just took thinking about it the right way to get the process going. So kudos to Govorukh and McAteer, who managed to do what Apple itself either couldn’t or wouldn’t and got the job done.
