EvE Online To Get Substantial Alteration, Merge With Dust 514
Not too long ago, there was an event for folks who like EvE Online, the EvE Fanfest. And out at that event, a trailer made an appearance, and left many wondering just what would come of it. Early suggestions, and these are just early suggestions as yet, say there’s a fair chance that the popular space-based MMO might get a taste of the FPS treatment, in a combining of the worlds of EvE Online and a first person shooter called Dust 514.

For the 3000 folks who saw this trailer out at EvE Fanfest, it was sufficient to bring them to a standing ovation. And with good reason–the trailer in question implies ground forces operating in tandem with the massive superships of the EvE universe. It may well be, some are speculating, that this signals a change in the universe in which you will not only get to pilot ships but also command ground forces in siege efforts, possibly aided and abetted by orbital strikes from your ships orbiting whatever hunk of rock it is you’re trying to take over or destroy or do whatever it is you’re planning to do there.
Further digging around provides a little extra evidence on this with word from a dev blog saying that Dust 514, a first person shooter from CCP, the people behind EvE, and EvE itself will, at one point, connect. And if that’s truly the case, or it doesn’t get changed or canceled at some point, this is going to do some really interesting things to the entire MMO world.
The current titan, unquestionably, of online gaming has to be World of Warcraft, but will World of Warcraft be able to compete when you’ve got what might be a multiple-world system going on with EvE, essentially giving you multiple games in one? If what actually happens here is what the early projections say will happen, well, it’s going to alter the landscape, that’s sure enough. Just how, though, will remain to be seen.
