Valve Talks About Future Plans For Steam On Consoles [With Portal 2 On PS3 Supporting A Handful Of Steam Features, Valve Discusses Where They'd Like To Go With Consoles In The Future]
We already know that the PS3 version of Portal 2 will include support for some Steam features, including things like cross-platform chat, saving to Steam Cloud, and probably most importantly, being able to download the PC or Mac version at no additional cost. In a recent interview with GamerZines, Valve programmer Jeep Barnett discussed the future of Steam and consoles, describing Portal 2 as a hopeful first step in seeing more Steam features in console games.

“We were talking earlier about being able to buy (Portal 2) for PS3 and have a linked version for PC and Mac as well,” Barnett said. “Well, we’d love to go the other way with it. Say you buy it on PC and then you have a downloadable version for PS3. That would be beautiful and is something that I would personally like to see next. But there are a lot of other things too.”
Barnett also says that Valve would like to see cross-platform chat outside of Portal 2, as well as have support for Steam on all next-gen consoles from day one. All of this, he says, is up to Sony and Microsoft, but if Steam integration with the PS3 version of Portal 2 works well, I think there’s a chance Valve could see their wishes granted – however crazy they may seem at the present moment.
