Team Fortress 2 Offers Special Hats For Your Characters In Exchange For Donation To Japan Earthquake Relief [Want To Help Out With The Japanese Relief Effort? Buy Your Team Fortress 2 Character A Special Hat]
Hey gamers–anyone out there want to throw down a few bucks to help out the Japanese earthquake survivors, and yet at the same time feel like you got something out of it besides the intrinsic satisfaction of doing something to help others? Well, the folks behind Team Fortress 2–and Valve–saw you coming and are thus offering a way to let you donate some cash and look good doing it thanks to a new line of hats.

Most multiplayer gamers are likely already familiar with the antics of the Team Fortress crew–does anyone not know that the Heavy’s machine gun is named Sasha?– but now, if you’re a Team Fortress 2 player, it doesn’t matter if you’re a demoman or a spy, you’ll have just as much opportunity to do good as anyone else.
Valve’s offering up three different hat styles in the Mann Co. store for you to purchase–you’ll have your choice of the Humanitarian’s Hachimaki for $7.99, or you can step up to the Benefactor’s Kanmuri for just $19.99. And then, for some reason, they blow the doors off the whole thing and step you all the way up to the Magnanimous Monarch hat, which will set you back a substantial $99.99.
All the proceeds, meanwhile–regardless of which hat you go with–will go to Red Cross disaster relief efforts, so there’s not much worry about your money being misused there. You’ll only have until April 6 to get your hat of choice, and word is there will also be noisemakers available if you’re not into the hat thing, so head on out to Valve and get your upgrade.
Smart idea, I’d say; offer up a little badge of courage, such as it is, for a donation to a good cause. Though frankly, I think they could have put a few more steps in there going from $20 clear up to $100. Maybe somebody could have swung $50, or even $75, but a full Benjamin just wasn’t doable at the time. Be a shame to miss out on those Team Fortress players. Still, a good idea, and hopefully one that will give the Japanese plenty of help.
