Geohot Confirms: He Is South America -- On Vacation

Despite Sony Claims Of PS3 Hacker Geohot Running Away to South America, George Hotz Has Simply Gone On A Spring Break Vacation

The case of Sony versus George Hotz and the hacked PS3. This is certainly turning into an interesting event. And without going super far into the back story, George Hotz, who is perhaps better known online as Geohot was the first person to gain hypervisor access to the PlayStation 3 and he also released root keys for the system to the public.

That said, some will also remember him as being the first person to jailbreak the iPhone way back when. But without turning this into his Wikipedia entry, lets get back to the recent story that broke yesterday — Geohot high-tailing it to South America. Basically, from what it seems, Sony is making it look like he went to South America in an effort to disrupt or in general just slow down the case. Sony is also claiming some issues with the hard drives that were turned over, but for now the case of running to South America.

And coming straight from George, well, straight from his Geohot Got Sued blog, he confirms that he is in South America, however that it is nothing more than a spring break vacation. That said, here is what he has to say;

Factually, it’s true I’m in South America, on a vacation I’ve had planned and paid for since November. I mean, it is Spring break; hacking isn’t my life. Rest assured that not a dime of legal defense money would ever go toward something like this. And of course Townsend loves the idea of painting me as an international fugitive. I have been in contact with my lawyers almost every day; I would not let the case suffer. That said, I also won’t let this ridiculous lawsuit run my life either. Then the fearmongerers win.

That said, while we claim to have no personal knowledge of why he is in South America (running and hiding or just vacationing) there is one thing that seems clear — he is still rather up on the news. Ok, that much is less of a surprise because someone on the run would likely need to keep up, but, and this is a big but — they probably would not publicly post an update on their blog if they were on the run. Either way though, this case seems to be getting more interesting by the day.
