iPhone 4 Unlock Physically Possible, No Jailbreak Required

If you ask me Apple has won the iPhone 4 unlock wars. The iPhone Dev Team is still working on providing a viable iPhone 4 Ultrasn0w unlock solution that will help you use your new iPhone 4 (sporting one of the new basebands: 2.10.04, 3.10.01 & 4.10.01), but by the time they get a working tool to the masses Apple might go ahead and launch the iPhone 5 already. And then people will want to unlock that handset instead.

However we learned (thanks to our readers) that there’s a new way of unlocking the device, one that apparently doesn’t require a prior jailbreak. It’s called a Gevey SIM and what it does is to fool the phone into thinking that you’re using an actual allowed SIM card. (You’d actually have to cut your current SIM card and fit it into the Gevey SIM card as shown above and then insert the whole thing into the iPhone 4′s SIM slot.) However fun it may all sound, this method doesn’t appear to be that legal as what it does is to use the emergency dialer to help bypass the iPhone 4 lock.

Furthermore the Gevey SIM card itself would cost you around $50 and you’d have to order one from China, not that this would be a problem. But your carrier could, at least in theory, detect what you’re doing, and block your account(s). Sure you could always change your number, especially those of you that prefer pre-pay deals, but then the carrier might get around the hack and permanently issue a fix for this security whole.

Moreover Apple, which by now is well aware of the hack, will most likely find a way to neutralize it in future iOS updates, so there are plenty of reasons to avoid the Gevey SIM. Those of you that still want it should know that the Gevey SIM appears to run on iPhone 4s with iOS 4.2.1 on board and sporting either baseband 2.10.04 or 3.10.01 or on iPhone 4s with iOS 4.3 on board and baseband 4.10.01.
