CTIA 2011: Wi-Fi Only HTC Flyer To Hit Best Buy This Spring
We’ve been stalking the HTC Flyer of late with the same degree of intensity that’s commonly reserved for the villains of certain slasher movies, and as such, we’ve managed to catch a newfound tidbit. While before, we hadn’t yet heard about release dates and pricing on the HTC Flyer, one of those blanks has now been filled in thanks to the folks out at Best Buy–we know that they’ll be getting the Flyer in for sale this spring. And all the more interesting–they will have a wi-fi only version.

If that sounds a little vague to you, and that’s not surprising as “this spring” covers a pretty hefty chunk of the calendar, bear in mind that spring has already sprung in the Northern Hemisphere, and did so back on March 20th. Considering that March itself is nearly out of steam, that means we’re looking at a release date in roughly the next eight to ten weeks, give or take, because you get much farther out than that and you’re into summer. Consider further that earlier word suggested a mid-April release and you’ve pinned it down still further.
But it’s that second point that will likely snare a lot of interest–you won’t necessarily need to go through a cell phone dealer to get your hands on this because it’s a wi-fi only tablet. Meanwhile, everything else is reportedly staying the same–it’s still a seven inch tablet showing at 1024 x 600 resolution, still packing Android 2.3, still carrying both a five megapixel rear facing camera and a 1.3 megapixel version in the front and a somewhat disappointing overall 16 gigs of storage (disappointing when you consider full terabyte hard drives can be had for around a hundred bucks in some cases).
But still–if you’re in the market for a new tablet and you’d rather not go through a contract period, you’ll certainly want to be keeping an eye on the Best Buy fliers for the next few weeks here, because the HTC Flyer is likely coming sooner than you might think. Sadly, price is still up in the air, but I’d figure this version would cost less as there’s no extra radio in it.
