14-Year-Old Scammed Out of $500 Over Xbox Live

14-Year-Old Boy Gives Up Father's Email Address & Password After Being Promised Microsoft Points Over Xbox Live, Ends Up With $500 Credit Card Charge

Another story about a family losing ridiculous amounts of money over Xbox Live has surfaced on the internet, this time involving a 14-year-old boy who was scammed out of $500 dollars by someone over Xbox Live who promised to get him Microsoft Points.

Apparently, Zach Grant was playing his Xbox 360 one night and received a message over Xbox Live by one Mr Lamborgini23, who promised to get him Microsoft Points in exchange for only email address and password. It sounds like a decent enough deal from someone with a nice enough name, but Mr Lamorgini23′s plot, of course, was much more dubious than that, gaining access to Zach’s father’s credit card information and using it to rack up a $500 bill over Xbox Live.

It’s difficult to get up on the soap box here, because at least the parents are being sensible about the whole thing – unlike the mother who added her credit card info to her son’s Xbox Live account without any parental restrictions enabled, and then was outraged at Microsoft when her son charged more than £1000 to it.

One thing does need to be said though: in the video below, it plays part of the message sent to Zach, where Mr Lamborgini23 says “You have like 20 minutes to send me an email address and password and I am not a hacker.”

Just so we can hopefully avoid something like this in the future, here’s the golden rule when it comes to interacting with others on the internet: when someone is soliciting any kind information from you and says “I am not a hacker,” they are definitely going to steal something from you. Always.
