The Witcher 2 To Have No DRM When Bought Through GOG.com

CD Projekt Denounces DRM, Says That They Won't Restrict The Witcher 2 If You But It From Their Site

The folks at CD Projekt have issued a press release that is sure to make a few people happy. If you buy The Witcher 2: Assassination of Kings from GOG.com, you won’t be hampered by any DRM schemes at all. The Polish company denounced DRM, saying that DRM is no way to combat piracy.

CD Projekt also owns and operates GOG.com (Good Old Games), the site that sells vintage PC games without any DRM and configured to run on modern PCs. Considering their stance against DRM with GOG.com and its games, it isn’t a complete surprise that they won’t have any sort of DRM scheme on The Witcher 2. Witcher 2 will also be the first “new” game to appear on GOG by our count. Does this mean that GOG is turning a corner from selling only used games to selling new games? Do they plan to compete with Steam, Impulse, Direct2Drive and the other online distribution platforms.

In the press release, CD Projekt’s Managing Director Guillaume Rambourg said:

DRM is not an effective way to combat piracy. Our main concern has always been the user’s experience with the titles they purchase, and DRM effects that experience in a negative way, which is why we’ve been absolutely thrilled at the opportunity to distribute CD Projekt RED’s incredible RPG. We’re also pleased that we’ve been able to stick to our guns with The Witcher 2 and release it DRM free to all of our customers around the world.

Pre-ordering The Witcher 2 on GOG is completely free, you won’t have to put any money down on the game until it’s time for release. That’s sort of a weird solution, but maybe CD Projekt is trying to gage interest. Either way, you can pre-order The Witcher 2 now at GOG.com and other retailers. It’s due out May 17th for the PC.
