Sony Ericsson: Japanese Quake Will Affect Our Supply Chains
Sony Ericsson, one of the top mobile phone manufacturers in the world, has issued a press statement updating the world on their status following the Japanese quake. Sony is, of course, a Japanese company, but remember that Sony Ericsson is a joint venture between Sony and Swedish firm Ericsson, and I believe that the Sony Ericsson firm is based in London. Regardless, the company does have a large number of employees in Japan, and they’ve reported that all 1,100 SE employees in Japan weren’t injured in the earthquake, and there were no serious damage to their offices.

However, that’s the only good news in their press statement. Sony Ericsson says that they’re contacting all suppliers and attempting to figure out how this disaster will affect their supply lines. While they admit that they currently don’t understand the whole scope of how the Japanese disaster will affect them, they add: “Sony Ericsson anticipates disruption to its supply chain operations.”
As many readers will be aware, Sony Ericsson has become a major manufacturer in the Android market, even though they don’t have a very big presence in the American Android scene. Their Xperia line of phones has been making an impact worldwide – and their most recent phone, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, is the “PlayStation Phone” that some have been waiting for. It’s got the slide-out gamepad and will feature the PlayStation Suite store, which will allow some PlayStation games to be played on the Android phone itself.
While there is a much more serious human tragedy going on in Japan right now (and we’re not insensitive to such things), we at TFTS have been trying to document the technology-related stories to the earthquake.
