College Student Trades Spot in Manhattan iPad 2 Line For Lady GaGa Tickets
Like any Apple product launch, there were people camped out for the device. And, the “flagship” Apple Store in Manhattan (with the glass cube on Fifth Street) was no different. Ms. Amanda Foote, a student at the Manhattan Community College, was first in line at that store, having started camping there since Wednesday at 5pm. But, she sold her spot at the head of the line in order to gain some cash for Lady GaGa tickets.

Foote said that she had no intention of buying an iPad 2, and grabbed a spot in line just for the purpose of selling it to some Manhattanite with too much money somebody who wants an iPad 2 really bad. You could argue that she wasn’t really in line at all – if she had no intent to buy an iPad 2. Regardless, she waited in line for 41 hours from 5pm on Wednesday until 9am on Friday when she sold it. She claims to have slept only 3 hours during those two days – and some jerk stole a box of donuts she had brought for food. New York City, eh? She sold it to one Hazem Sayed, an App Store app developer who had to leave Friday afternoon and didn’t have time to wait in line for an iPad 2.
What was the price for pole position in the iPad 2 line? $900, according to Foote. She turned down an earlier offer of $600 from somebody else, because she felt that she could get a better off later on. She’s planning to spend the $900 on Lady GaGa concert tickets. Money well spent?
What do you think about this line squatting? Smart way to make money, or just a scam on those who want an iPad 2 badly?

She waited in line for 41 hours. This benefits no one one. No goods or services are created. It is wasted time and is inefficient. The iPad 2 starts at $499.
Apple should charge a higher price to begin with to avoid these long waiting lines. There is a shortage at the $499 price the first few days. They could start at $1000 and lower it $100 each day until it is back down to $499. Once these waiters get one they sell them for a very high price to someone else anyway and some go even higher than $1000 when sold on eBay.
Apple could get some great PR by donating the extra profit to charity. They could use that money to donate computers to schools. People who bought at the extra high price early on could get a t-shirt that says they support the Apple school computer initiative. So they could get to brag about their “donation.”
