Chrome OS Cr-48 Notebook Shipments Have Stopped "For Now"

Google VP Tweets: Google Cr-48 Pilot Program Shipments Have Ended, Suggests Retail Devices Will Arrive "Mid-Year"

Google opened their Chrome OS Cr-48 notebook Pilot Program back in early December and gave those interesting in testing one of the notebooks until December 21st to sign up and hope they get chosen.

Well, as it turns out, Google has officially stopped sending out the Cr-48 notebooks. In other words, if you had signed up to participate and have not yet received anything, you can stop hoping that a Cr-48 is going to appear on your doorstep. The details are coming from Twitter and by way of Sundar Pichai who is a VP of Product Management at Google.

It seems a still-hopeful-Jeff Palmer (@palmjeff) asked the question outright;

Is there hope for us that applied to the CR-48 program but have yet to receive one? Are there more units shipping?

And the answer was probably not what he was hoping for as Mr. Pichai replied back with the following;

Sorry we have shipped all units for now. Thanks for your interest and we will have partner devices out mid-year.

Of course, while this is probably not what Jeff, along with many others wanted to hear it does bring us to the other interesting point — partner devices are coming soon. Well, if you consider mid-year to be soon. Based on that one could assume that we will begin seeing the first commercially available Chrome OS notebooks hit around June or July. All things considered, that is not all that far away from now. About 5-6 months.

And speaking of the Cr-48, for those who were lucky enough to get their hands on one and were frustrated enough by the trackpad to set it aside — you may want to give it another look because that last update really made some positive change. And I only say that from personal experience and the new found ability to use the Cr-48 without the need for a USB mouse attached.

With that, maybe we will hear some more Chrome OS related news during Google I/O.
