Jolicloud OS Gets Rebranded, Will Now Be Known As Joli OS

Jolicloud Moves To Avoid Confusion Between Desktop & Web Versions, Renames Desktop OS To Joli OS

Though I have been using Chrome OS a bit more since having received my Cr-48, I do still have a Jolicloud based netbook that gets some regular use. That said, I have long been following (and enjoying) Jolicloud and have watched them go from a netbook only operating system to an operating system that can restore just about any old computer to having a web only based version come available in the Chrome Web Store.

Needless to say, some of this will likely come with some confusion with what to call each version and in response to that — the Jolicloud team has announced a small change. Plus, they made some promises for the future.

First though, the desktop version of the operating system, the one that you download, transfer to a USB flash drive and then install on your system will now be known as Joli OS. And as far as the Jolicloud name, that will remain for the web only version. Which when you look at web only and cloud, that sort of makes sense. Of course, in reality both versions make use the cloud.

Furthermore, while there is a Jolicloud app available in the Chrome Web Store, there is also support for a variety of browsers to include Firefox 4, Safari 5 and even the iPad. Though, the iPad support is noted as being “an experimental HTML5 port.” And for those wondering, you can head to my.jolicloud.com/welcome to login to your Jolicloud account.

And lastly, the promise of Android. The Jolicloud team noted that they are “extremely excited by the potential of Jolicloud in the mobile space” and have noted that an Android app is coming in the “future.” And just to clarify, those running the desktop version will only see a change in the name, otherwise the operating system will continue to run just as it had in the past.
