Google Updates CR-48 Laptop

Google's Chrome OS Prototype Machine Gets Update, 3G And Touchpad Fixes

It’s been months since Google first sent out CR-48 laptops to those wishing to beta test the Chrome OS for Google. And in all that time, the device has yet to receive a software update, until now. Google has sent out a modest software update that has provided Chrome OS users with a few well-needed upgrades.

Here’s the full list of what Google patched in the update for the CR-48:

  • 3G Modem Activation Fixes
  • 3G connection to the carrier fixes
  • Wi-Fi connectivity/Out of the Box fixes
  • New trackpad and sensitivity setting adjusted
  • Auto update engine and debugging improvements
  • Power optimizations
  • GTalk video/chat optimizations
  • Audio CPU utilization improvements
  • Improved on-screen indicators: brightness, network status, update icon

The trackpad was one of the most complained about issues with the CR-48 I’d heard from people who owned one of the unmarked stealth laptops. Other than that, I guess the 3G fixes are the other major thing here.

Like Android and Google TV, the general reaction to Chrome OS was “Well, this could be better”. I suppose it’s something that most people liked the all-black stealth CR-48 laptop than the Chrome software. Remember that Android was awful at first though Google has now improved the mobile OS into something much better now. I think if Google keeps modestly improving Chrome, it could be something one day.

Are any of our readers CR-48 users? What do you think about this software update? Is it just what the doctor ordered? Tell us what you think the comments, or head over to the all new TFTS forums.

The chrome os updates are nothing to get bent out of shape about.

Where the chrome shines, is the ease of use and the fact it awlays works. Anyone who has windows, knows the sheer anger that develops when you can’t get your pc to work(get online, start up.) Than there is security with windows, and thats gut wrenching in its self. Ex: Like when you run a a virus scan and find out a backdoor trojan has been on your pc for weeks, and 3 days ago you used your debit card to buy something. <– thats pure terror.

So therefore. Chrome os may not be super pretty, may not have a bunch of 3rd party software yet, But it works good and has security, Somethings windows constantly still has problems with.
