Samsung Galaxy Indulge Memory Cards Regularly Report To MetroPCS Servers
This next bit is undoubtedly going to have some people freaking out; any time you get phrases like “reports to servers” or “monitors content use”, it’s the kind of thing that’s going to get some people all fired up. But it’s the kind of thing you should know about, especially if you’re looking to get your hands on a Samsung Galaxy Indulge.
The Samsung Galaxy Indulge, which we reported on not so long ago, has some pretty impressive specs, and of course, a free copy of Iron Man 2 included with the four gigs of storage that we also mentioned. But a new development has emerged regarding that very same storage–it’s “intelligent”.
Under normal circumstances, “intelligent” storage might be a good thing. Maybe it takes things you only occasionally access and uploads them via wi-fi or 3G to a cloud server to get them off the main drive but still leave them accessible to you later. But sadly, this is not what intelligent storage means here, according to reports. What this means, basically, is that whenever you access the memory, the memory in turn contacts the MetroPCS servers to “monitor their content use”.
Of course, both SanDisk and MetroPCS are quick to note that these statistics are completely anonymous, and that all this access is being done strictly to personalize the content offered to users to make their overall experience better (though even this sounds like something of a contradiction in terms; if the uploading is that anonymous then how do they know whose content to personalize?). And even assuming both SanDisk and MetroPCS are quite on the level–and there’s no reason to assume otherwise, mind you–it leaves open some very unpleasant possibilities for abuse later on. It’s not just streaming content that would go through that memory, I’d say; photos, video, contact information…how is this being protected in response?
It may just be a tempest in a teapot, but it’s already garnering attention…precious little of it positive. But for those concerned, relief may be just replacing a memory card away.
