iPad 2 Live: Steve Jobs Takes A Swing At Samsung

Jobs Makes Fun Of Samsung's Numbers For The Galaxy Tab Release - But Was He Getting The Wrong Quote?

At the iPad 2 launch event in San Francisco, Steve Jobs started with some facts and figures that makes Apple look good. He didn’t miss a chance to take a swing at Android and the mobs of Android tablets out there. But, did he get the wrong quote? On stage, Jobs showed a slide with a quote where Lee Young-hee said that sales to consumers were disappointing – but Jobs may have gotten the mistranslated version of the quote.

Here’s the quote the Steve showed on stage on his slide:

As you heard, our sell-in was quite aggressive … around two million. In terms of sell-out, we believe it was quite small.

That’s from Samsung VP Lee Young-hee. Certainly makes it looks like the Galaxy Tab isn’t selling too well. Why would a Samsung executive say that publicly? We questioned this in the TFTS bullpen where we’re covering the iPad 2 event live. Finally, I looked it up and found out that after that Lee quote become reposted all over tech blogs, Samsung corrected it, saying that it was a mistranslation of the Korean quote. Here’s what Samsung says is the real quote:

As you heard, our sell-in was quite aggressive … around two million. In terms of sell-out, we believe it was quite smooth.

What do you think? Did Apple and Steve knowingly take the wrong quote in order to embarrassĀ Samsung? I reviewed the Samsung Galaxy Tab for this site, and found it to be an awesome little 7-inch tablet.

What do you think about Steve using the first version of the quote? Unfair? Just business? Tell us what you think in the comments.

Typical Steve jobs move. Of course he knew.

    2. Ron says:

If they posted it, they posted it.

Retracting it, and revising it is something they are allowed to do I suppose, but it doesn’t change the fact that they posted it in the first place.
