Maingear Shows Off Titan Laptop

Maingear's Titan Weighs In At 12 Pounds, Boasts 17 Inch Display, And Yes, It's A Laptop

For those of you out there sick of the namby-pamby flimsy little laptops out there masquerading as real machines, I’ve got just the laptop to put some heft back in your laptop case. It’s from Maingear, and they’re calling it the Titan. Not only is it a machine with massive power in its chassis, it’s also got a massive chassis, tipping the scales at a hefty 12 pounds.

Best reinforce your laptop bag straps, or invest in a cart with wheels, because this sucker’s going to bulk you up just carrying it down to Starbucks, where you’ll need a quadruple-shot espresso just to get the energy to haul it back to your car. What’s this behemoth packing, you wonder? Strap in, because I’ve got the rundown right here.

Like I said in the title, it’s got a magnificent 17.3 inch display, LED backlit, that offers 1920 x 1080 resolution, otherwise known as full 1080p. It’s supported by an Intel Core i7-990X Extreme Edition processor, as many as two GeForce GTX 485M graphics cards, as many as three hard drives, and even two optical drives to boot. It’s also what looks like the first ever laptop to boast Bigfoot Networks’ Killer Wireless-N adapter, which Maingear says will give you five times the performance. And it even offers a pair of the fastest USB ports out there (USB 3.0), an eSATA port, an HDMI port, and even, for some reason, a FireWire port.

The basic configuration kicks off at an Intel Core i7-950 processor, a hefty six gigs of RAM, 500 gigs of hard drive space, and a pair of GeForce GTX 460M graphics cards, and is set to retail at $2799. Add two grand onto that tab and you’ll get the full Intel Core i7-990X and the pair of GeForce GTX 485M graphics cards.

It’s being called a “desktop replacement” and it’s no wonder. With a hardware profile like that this thing is going to run rings around most any desktop out there, save only the highest-end material. And it’s sufficiently burly to give you a load of bonus testosterone points just for having it in front of you–imagine showing up at that LAN party with this beast in tow. It’s an impressive laptop, though when you can get it is still unclear, so keep your eyes out and your knees bent–you’ll want to lift with the legs.
