Samsung To Start Streaming 3D Movies [Early Word Says Samsung Will Start Streaming 3D Movies In Europe This Year, Expansion To Follow?]
We’ve all known for some time now that Samsung has some pretty sweet 3D televisions out there, especially in its growing LED market. But what’s recently come to light is that, at least starting in Europe, those 3D televisions are due to get some 3D content streamed directly to the televisions themselves.

Samsung is set to, according to reports, use its Smart Hub platform to start pulling in 3D content from PictureBox, a European supplier of streaming content, essentially the European answer to Hulu.
Right now, this is strictly a European launch, as PictureBox is a European company that has all the correct rights to 3D content in the European market (I’m not a lawyer, but that would be my guess as to the reason Samsung’s going with that supplier). And of course, it’s also a good move for Samsung to use as sort of a “shakedown cruise” (a shakedown cruise is a nautical term, meaning a cruise in which technological and mechanical issues are discovered in advance of future voyages) to see what issues it may have in the future of getting streaming 3D content to televisions from more cloud-based suppliers.
This poses several other interesting questions–where would Samsung get the 3D content to stream in other countries? Would they go through Netflix? Hulu? Who would have the access to the 3D content to put through Samsung Smart Hubs elsewhere in the world? Is someone looking into this literally as we speak?
It’s certainly a market niche that could stand some filling, as 3D televisions slowly gain in popularity and glasses-free 3D systems become more readily available. There’s a lot at stake here, and the first to lay hands on it may well control the niche.
Good questions all, but Europeans had best get the popcorn (or its immediate European equivalent) ready because 3D streaming is set to hit their Samsungs later this fall.
