Netflix & CBS Announce New Licensing Agreement, Means More Content For The Users

Netflix Watch Instant Offerings Will Include CBS TV Episodes Such As Star Trek, Frasier & Cheers Beginning In Early April

Netflix and CBS have announced a new licensing agreement that means more available content. From the details that were provided, it looks like this will mean Netflix users will soon be able to stream a wide variety of CBS content. But perhaps more important for Netflix, this deal means they are the “only online premium subscription service with shows featured on all four broadcast networks and dozens of cable TV’s biggest brands.”

In other words, Netflix has a rather wide selection at this point. That said, the deal with CBS is noted as being non-exclusive, which means that if for some reason you have an aversion to becoming a Netflix subscriber, you may be able to find these shows and series with others (maybe Hulu Plus) at some point in the future.

The CBS content will come available with Netflix beginning in early April and is described as being “dozens of hit shows from CBS.” Some of the series that were mentioned specifically include Medium and Flashpoint as well as Family Ties, Frasier, Cheers, Hawaii Five-0, Star Trek, Twin Peaks, The Twilight Zone and The Andy Griffith Show.

And while this may seem like a fairly limited amount of content as of now, there was some hope that it will be expanding in the future. According to a statement from Ted Sarandos, who is the Chief Content Officer for Netflix;

“We are thrilled to be bringing CBS shows to Netflix and are looking forward to growing our relationship over time,”

Lets just hope that by grow he really means offering more content. Otherwise, it was noted that the terms were not disclosed and that CBS has the option to renew after the two years are over. In other words, no mention was made as to how much Netflix had to shell out in order to make these shows available for their users.
