Microsoft Pulls Windows Phone 7 Update For Samsung Devices

Amidst Complaints, Microsoft Shuts Down Windows Phone 7 Update For Samsung Devices On A Temporary Basis

The what should have been exciting news came on Monday when Microsoft announced that they had begun rolling out the first software update for Windows Phone 7. Of course, we also quickly learned that the update was merely a prep for the update that everyone seems to be waiting for.

Yup, the first update turned out to be nothing more than a prep for the copy/paste update. But that aside, it still seemed like a step in the right direction, a small step, but a forward step nonetheless. Sadly though, things then proceeded to get even worse for those with a Samsung device and at present the update has been temporarily disabled (for Samsung smartphones).

According to the details that we have seen thus far, a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that Microsoft has “identified a technical issue with the Windows Phone update process.” And not that this will make it better for anyone that was affected, however it was noted that this is only affecting a small number of phones.

In particular that small number of phones seems to be the Samsung Omnia and the complaints seem to suggest that the update fails to properly run its course and ends up leaving the phone in an unusable state. Furthermore, reports coming from Microsoft state that the users who are affected are being told to return their device in exchange for a new one. Simply put, it seems like these devices are truly bricked.

Either way though, while a big inconvenience for those affected, we have to commend Microsoft on the fact that they are not messing around and have not only stopped the update but are also not messing with getting a working phone into the hands of those in need. But the real bottom line here, always make sure your data is backed up before performing an update of any kind. After all, this should have been a small simple update.
