JVC's DLA-F110, Geared Toward Planetariums and Museums, Projects The Universe In Your House
Say what you will about the projector–there’s plenty you could say, make no mistake there–from the fact that they’re noisy and expensive to the fact that they require regular bulb replacements to be of any use, there are plenty of downsides to the projector. But one thing they do better than any television is give you a massive display. After all, when you go to the movies, you’re not watching a gigantic television screen–you’re watching a projected image. And that’s where things like the JVC DLA-F110 come into play.

JVC’s impressive new projector will not only handle 3D video, but will show in a 30000 : 1 contrast ratio at a surprisingly bright 1700 lumens. It has essentially the same specs as earlier models like the DLA-X7 (except for the exceptions previously noted), including two HDMI ports for you to hook in your various devices, but shows its video a whole lot brighter.
It’s geared primarily toward museums and planetariums, which means if you decided to patch one of these into your home theater system, your geek cred would probably shoot through the roof. The down side, of course, is that they’re presently available only in Japan (as far as I can pin down) and are selling at the downright hefty price of 900,000 yen. That translates into, roughly, $11,000 US.
Can you get a 3D video projector for vastly less money? Sure you can–I spotted one on Amazon packing 2500 lumens (though only a 3200 : 1 contrast ratio) for $549. And you would probably be able to get by without a 30000 : 1 contrast ratio for watching this week’s installment of Two and a Half Men. Still though, for those who want the big and the bad, better get in touch with your favorite importer and get your checkbook handy, because this one looks pretty sweet, and I’m sure the planetarium and museum crowds will likely agree when these start cropping up at their favorite cerebral nightspots of choice.
